How to Service Your Air Conditioner Yourself
Regular maintenance of your air conditioner is essential to keep it running efficiently and to extend its lifespan. While professional servicing is recommended annually, you can perform basic maintenance yourself to keep your unit in top shape.
Here is a full list of tasks a professional will undertake during an annual service:
Clean/Replace Air Filters, Clean the Condenser Coils, Straighten the Coil Fins, Check the Drain Line, Inspect the thermostat, Test the system.
Here are some simple things you can perform to to keep your unit in top shape-
Step 1: Turn Off the Power
Before performing any maintenance, ensure your air conditioner is turned off at the circuit breaker. This is crucial for safety and prevents any risk of electric shock.
Step 2: Clean Air Filter
The air filter is one of the most critical components of your air conditioner. A clogged or dirty filter can reduce airflow and strain the system, leading to higher energy bills and reduced efficiency.
Locate the filter (usually behind the front panel or inside the return air duct).
If reusable, wash it with warm water and mild soap, then let it dry completely before reinserting.
If disposable, contact your nearest airconditioning company to replace it with a new one of the same size and type.
Step 3: Clean the Condenser Coils
The outdoor unit contains condenser coils that can collect dirt, dust, and debris over time, reducing efficiency. Be very gentle as they can be delicate.
Remove any leaves, grass, or debris from around the unit.
Use a coil cleaner or a mix of water and mild detergent to spray the coils.
Rinse with a garden hose, ensuring not to bend the delicate fins.
Step 4: Check the Drain Line
A clogged drain line can cause water leaks and damage.
Locate the drain line, usually near the indoor unit.
Use a wet/dry vacuum to remove any blockages.
Pour a mixture of warm water and vinegar through the line to prevent future clogs.
Step 5: Test the System
Once everything is cleaned and checked, turn the power back on and test the unit.
Listen for any unusual noises.
Check if the air is cooling effectively.
Ensure there are no leaks or airflow obstructions.
When to Call a Professional
If you notice any of the following, it’s best to seek professional help:
Strange noises or smells from the unit
Weak airflow despite cleaning
Refrigerant leaks or ice buildup on coils
The system fails to turn on or cool properly
At least once annually as prevention
Regular DIY maintenance can keep your air conditioner running smoothly, improve efficiency, and help avoid costly repairs. However, for more complex issues, a professional HVAC technician should be consulted.
By following these steps, you can enjoy a cool and comfortable home all summer long!
